Tall Joe-pye-weed
Flowering heads are small, each having
5 white disc flowers. Ray flowers are absent. Involucral bracts
are green, hairy, elongate, and have rounded tips. The inflorescence
is highly branched, has many small flowering heads, and is slightly
convex, or flat-topped, when viewed from the side. The leaves
are in pairs and attach by winged petioles. Leaves are elliptical,
tapering equally toward the base and the tip. Leaf margins are
smooth toward the base, but have sharp teeth toward the tip.
Leaves have 3 conspicuous veins that run parallel to the leaf
edges. Occurs from August through September in dry wooded openings.
