Brown-eyed Susan
Flowering heads have a central cluster
of purplish disk flowers, surrounded by 6 to 12 ray flowers that
range from yellow to orange in color, and have downward-curving
tips. Leaves occur individually on the stem. Upper leaves are
lance-shaped and moderately broad. Lower leaves may be divided
into two or three distinct or indistinct lobes. Leaf margins
have shallow teeth, at intervals of 0.5 to 1.0 cm, with the pointed
ends of the teeth directed toward the leaf tip. Most leaves have
winged petioles. The plant is approximately knee high. Occurs
from late August into October, in woodlands and woodland edges.
The flowering heads of this species are smaller than those of
the Black-eyed Susan. Native to N. A.
